Since half of the world’s population currently lives within 60 km of the coast, the study of coastal flooding is a key issue from both a scientific and a management perspective. This page covers some of our work on coastal flooding.
As a collaborative effort with the center of e-research from the University of Auckland, an amazing flooding visualization of Auckland (NZ) over time has been developed at a high resolution. SLR, astronomical tide and storm surge are the parameters involved in the visualization.
DISCLAIMER: This is just a visualization using a simple bathtub approach. It should be used to understand, not to predict. More work and validation is needed to evaluate rigorously the flooding associated with each of the different contributors over time. At present, the interaction of the hydrodynamic components with the topo-bathymetry of the area is not accounted for in the visualization. To make the visualization experience easy for the user, only king tides and a large value of storm surge are considered.
